Description:

A single blade of grass was painted red on the lawn of 1 Spadina Cresent, Toronto, Canada. Paint was made naturally using pigment powder and linseed oil. Once painted, a snap shot photograph was taken and developed using conventional consumer printing techniques at a local drug store. Prints were developed at the standard snap shot size of 4X6”. 100 copies were made and distributed.

Statement:

Individuality is impossible. It’s an unachievable dream. Everyone strives for it, no one really achieves it. We are defined by our experiences, the people we meet, and places we go. And more often than not, we all experience the similar things, meet similar people and visit the same locations. With utter individuality, comedians would no longer be funny, movies would be irrelevant, and artists would not be able to connect with the audience.

Grass was chosen for its homogeneous property. When one thinks of grass, they hardly ever think of the single blades which make the lawn. A single blade of grass was painted red in an attempt to identify a unique identity.
